The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office announced that a man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to numerous charges related to a series of criminal activities.
According to officials, 53-year-old Danny Akins Jr. pleaded guilty to a range of felony and misdemeanor charges, including Felony Possession of Firearm by Felon, Felony Breaking and Entering with Intent to Terrorize, and several other serious offenses.
The incidents involving Akins began when he was taken into custody by the Asheville Police Department for allegedly breaking into his former domestic partner’s apartment and causing damage. This initial charge led to a series of subsequent criminal activities.
Authorities revealed that Akins was connected to a large theft ring responsible for stealing over $300,000 worth of wire owned by AT&T Incorporated. Additionally, deputies found stolen catalytic converters in a vehicle linked to Akins.
Before these recent crimes, Akins had previous convictions for serious offenses, including First Degree Kidnapping and Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon in 2011. He was released from prison in February 2017.
After pleading guilty, Akins was sentenced to 120 to 156 months in prison. He was also ordered to pay over $100,000 in restitution and court fees. During the sentencing, Akins expressed remorse for his actions.
District Attorney Todd Williams commended the collaboration between investigators, cooperating agencies, and witnesses that led to holding Akins accountable for his crimes. The community’s joint effort played a crucial role in addressing Akins’ criminal activities.
