ASHEVILLE, N.C. (HERE NEWS) — A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday, April 6, 2024, when a late-night crash on Interstate 40 in Asheville claimed the lives of two teenagers and left several others injured. The devastating crash involved six students, including individuals from Christ School, Charlotte Catholic, and Myers Park High School.
According to reports, William Neumann, 18, a student at Christ School hailing from Augusta, Georgia, was driving a 2015 Volvo passenger car at high speed in an attempt to exit the interstate when the vehicle collided with a tree. Neumann’s reckless driving led to the fatal crash, resulting in the tragic deaths of Robert “RJ” Fox, 19, from Wilmette, Illinois, and Sophia Gordan, 16, from Charlotte. Both Fox and Gordan were rear passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Among the survivors were Isabella Tarantelli, 18, and Abby Robinson, 17, who were quickly transported to Mission Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Both Tarantelli and Robinson, students of Charlotte Catholic High School, are described as resilient individuals with promising futures.
Kurt Telford, principal at Charlotte Catholic High School, expressed his sympathy for the students and families impacted by the tragedy. Telford mentioned that the girls attended the prom hosted by Christ School, an event that ultimately led to the fatal crash. Charlotte Catholic High School has been providing support through prayer gatherings and vigils to honor the memory of the deceased students.
As investigations into the crash continue, authorities are yet to determine the events leading up to the tragic incident. The focus remains on the well-being of the students and families affected by the loss, with hopes for a swift recovery for the injured survivors.
As the community mourns the loss of young lives in this heartbreaking accident, Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams will assess whether charges will be filed in connection with the crash. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues its thorough investigation to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
