Asheville, N.C. is buzzing with excitement as the community comes together to celebrate resilience and creativity during Radfest, happening this weekend from Saturday, Nov. 9, to Sunday, Nov. 10. This lively event spans from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. each day, transforming the River Arts District into a vibrant hub of artistic expression and communal support.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, which wreaked havoc on Asheville just six weeks ago, the River Arts District is stepping into the spotlight to showcase the indomitable spirit of its artists. An overwhelming 80% of the district suffered severe damage from the floodwaters, leaving many artists looking to rediscover their footing in the aftermath. But instead of focusing solely on the devastation, Radfest is a heartfelt gathering aimed at uplifting local talent and inviting everyone to reconnect.
During Radfest, visitors can explore numerous studios and galleries scattered across Roberts Street, Artful Way, Clingman Avenue, and Upper Depot Street. Artists will showcase their talents not only in their dedicated spaces but also in a lively parking lot setup at Pinegate Renewables and next to Pink Dog Creative. Expect a kaleidoscope of colors as you wander the streets, with artists exhibiting their breathtaking work, ready to share their creative journeys.
To add to the festive atmosphere, there will be a selection of food trucks serving delicious eats to fuel your exploration, as well as live music to keep spirits high. The event is not just a showcase of art; it’s a celebration of the community and an invitation to shop locally as the holidays approach. Every purchase supports the artists directly and contributes to the ongoing recovery efforts in the area.
The emotional impact of Hurricane Helene is hard to ignore, especially for those like Spencer Beals, an artist who faced the floodwaters head-on. He recalls the harrowing night, “the storm flooded my studio,” he shared. Beals recounts the frantic efforts to save his artwork, lifting pieces onto tables and barricading the door as water rushed in. “The water was rising at about a foot per hour,” he explained. It was a terrifying experience that left him fighting against the flood, eventually pushing his way to safety.
Although he has lost much in the destruction, Beals holds on to his salvaged paintings, cherishing the remnants of his creative haven. His story reflects the struggles many artists faced when the storm struck, offering a glimpse into their world and the challenges they continue to overcome.
This weekend’s Radfest is more than just an art fair; it’s a beacon of hope and community collaboration. Asheville’s local artists are calling out to neighbors and visitors alike, encouraging everyone to come by, show their support, and enjoy the diverse mix of creativity that the River Arts District has to offer. It’s a chance to shop, eat, and enjoy live music while participating in a collective effort to rebuild their artistic community.
So, mark your calendars and bring your friends and family! Join us for a celebration of art, resilience, and community spirit at Radfest. Together, we can help to bring life back to the River Arts District, one brushstroke, one melody, and one delicious bite at a time.
