Asheville Mourns the Loss of Beloved Local Minister Randy Shepherd

Asheville, a city rich in history and community, is currently in mourning after the passing of a cherished local figure, Randy Shepherd. Known for his devotion to his family and his deep-rooted faith, Randy leaves behind a legacy that will resonate in the hearts of many for years to come.

A Life Marked by Family and Faith

Born and raised in Asheville, Randy was the son of Delyn Shepherd, who passed away in 2012, and Betty Shepherd, who continues to honor his memory. He was a beloved brother to Toni Dillingham, Rex Shepherd, Linda Vonette Shepherd, and Gay Shepherd. Family members reminisce about Randy’s unwavering support and guidance. “Randy was always there for us, guiding us with his faith and love,” shared a family member, highlighting the impact he had on those closest to him.

Education and Passion for Ministry

Randy’s connection to Asheville wasn’t only personal; it was deeply woven into his educational journey. He attended Asheville High School and later pursued studies at the University of North Carolina Asheville (UNCA). It was during these formative years that his passion for ministry began to flourish, shaping him into the inspirational leader he became.

Co-Founding Crossfire Ministries

In January 1993, Randy took a significant step in his life’s work by co-founding Crossfire Ministries. This organization soon developed into a cornerstone of his mission to share the gospel and the love of Jesus Christ. “Randy had a unique ability to connect with people through sports,” remarked a close friend. He ingeniously used basketball as a medium, reaching out to the youth and helping them navigate their spiritual paths.

For over three decades, he poured his heart into Crossfire Ministries, engaging individuals from diverse backgrounds through various events, outreach programs, and international missions. His enthusiasm for connecting spirituality with everyday activities truly made a lasting impact on those he encountered. Many remember the warm conversations, community events, and his joyful spirit that lit up every room.

The Community Responds

Randy’s sudden passing has created a noticeable void not just for his family and close friends, but also within the global Christian community that admired his work. “He was more than just a minister; he was a friend to many,” stated another community member. The stories shared by those he helped illuminate the profound influence Randy had; he was a guiding light for countless individuals, navigating them through their personal challenges and hardships.

Celebrating Randy’s Life

A service to honor Randy’s life is scheduled for Sunday, September 29, at Trinity Baptist Church, located at 216 Shelburne Rd., Asheville, NC 28806. Friends and family are invited to visit starting at 1:30 PM in the main sanctuary, leading up to a memorial service at 3:00 PM. Those wishing to pay their respects can also attend a graveside service at Ashelawn Garden of Memory.

In lieu of flowers, Randy’s family has requested donations be made to Crossfire Ministries in his memory. “We want his legacy to continue through the lives touched by Crossfire,” said a family spokesperson, emphasizing the importance of sustaining the mission Randy so passionately cherished. Donations can be arranged through the organization’s website.

A Legacy that Lives On

Randy Shepherd’s life is a powerful testament to the profound impact of faith and community service. His ability to bridge sports and spirituality created a unique space for outreach, inspiring many to pursue their own passions. As friends and family gather to celebrate his incredible journey, they will undoubtedly reflect on the countless moments of kindness, encouragement, and love that defined Randy’s life.
