Resilience Shines in Asheville: Local Couple Overcomes Adversity and Continues to Inspire Community

Resilience Shines in Asheville: Mr. Bear and Ms. GiGi Are Back in the Driver’s Seat

Asheville, N.C. has recently become the backdrop of an inspiring story of courage and determination. The beloved duo known as Mr. Bear and Ms. GiGi – or Glenn and Gwen Goldthwaite as they’re known outside of their bus – have faced yet another significant challenge and are showing the community just what it means to endure.

A New Challenge after an Old Fire

Just when Glenn and Gwen thought they could catch a break after their harrowing experience six years ago when they lost their home to a devastating fire, fate dealt them another tough hand. Recently, Asheville struggled with severe weather due to Tropical Storm Helene, leaving their home soaked and in ruins once again.

“The walls, windows and all of these walls through here and into the bedroom were completely soaked with water,” Glenn recalled, his voice steady but tinged with emotion. The couple had poured everything they had into rebuilding their lives after the fire, and now, they found themselves back at square one.

“We put in new OSB, insulation and anything that was black, I ripped out. I put in new two-by-fours and ways. The bedroom was decimated on one side. All of this and the floor were gone,” he added, gesturing to where their home had once stood proudly.

Finding Joy Amidst the Chaos

Despite the tumultuous journey they’ve faced, Glenn and Gwen’s commitment to their roles as transport workers for Asheville City Schools hasn’t wavered. “The easiest part of my day is being on that bus,” Gwen shared. She beamed as she spoke about the kids they transport daily, highlighting how they bring a smile to her face even in these trying times.

For the Goldthwaites, the challenges don’t halt their dedication. Currently, they’ve shifted their living situation to a hotel in Maggie Valley, waking up by 4:30 a.m. to reach their first stop by 6:30 a.m. “We’ve worked so hard for six years to get where we’re at,” Gwen stated, embodying a spirit of unwavering resolve.

A Spirit of Community Support

What truly shines in Asheville is the overwhelming support from the community. The Goldthwaites take comfort in the kindness of their neighbors, who they describe as “good, old-fashioned summer folk.” “The people around here are great people. They’ve always been nice to us and taken care of us,” Glenn expressed, grateful for the camaraderie in times of hardship.

The couple exhibits a tenacious attitude toward rebuilding—pertaining not just to bricks and mortar but also to their mental fortitude. “We own this house. We paid for it. We worked hard for it. It’s ours,” Glenn emphasized, showcasing their determination not to be defeated by adversities.

Rebuilding with a Vision

While the journey of recovery may be slow, both Glenn and Gwen are optimistic about the future. “It may take a little while, but it will get done,” Gwen reassured as they prepared to roll up their sleeves and dive into repairing their lives once more. They know from experience that every effort counts toward creating their dream home.

In the face of challenges, resilience reigns supreme. Mr. Bear and Ms. GiGi serve as a poignant reminder that even amidst hardship, love, dedication, and community bonds can light the way forward. Their story continues to unfold, and as they embark on this rebuilding journey, they represent not just endurance but also the spirit of Asheville and its people.
