Asheville, N.C. – It’s been over a week since the winds and rains from Helene swept through the area, leaving behind a trail of flooding and damage that has created significant challenges for local residents and businesses. The aftermath of this storm has resulted in ongoing road closures, making travel difficult for many.
In light of the extensive damage, the city of Asheville has announced that Hendersonville Road and Biltmore Avenue will experience temporary closures to facilitate safe cleanup operations. From October 7 through October 13, 2024, these roads will be closed daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This closure will extend between All Souls Crescent and Meadow Road. The goal? To keep everyone safe while crews work hard to restore order in the Biltmore Village area.
City officials have emphasized that all lanes will be closed to regular traffic, but emergency vehicles will still be able to pass. It’s a good idea to plan ahead if you rely on these routes for your daily commute. The hope is that by taking these steps, road safety can be ensured while communities begin to heal and get back to normal.
In addition to local road closures, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is reporting several highways that remain affected. Interstate 40 is currently shut down in both directions near the Tennessee state line, specifically between Exit 432 and Exit 20. This closure has been classified as long-term, and no timeline for repairs has been announced yet.
Similarly, Interstate 26 is also closed near the state line at Exit 3, but there’s some good news: it is expected to reopen on Thursday, October 10. For those planning to travel through the region, NCDOT has provided detour options online to assist drivers in navigating the affected areas.
The impact of Helene is being felt far and wide; reports indicate there are currently 131 active incidents on main roadways and 542 incidents on secondary roads. Due to these circumstances, officials strongly advise travelers in the western counties to limit their trips to essential travel only. This precaution helps keep traffic manageable and allows cleanup crews to do their vital work more efficiently.
For residents who lost work due to the storm, there may be some relief in sight. The Disaster Unemployment Assistance program from the N.C. Department of Commerce could be available to provide a helping hand. If you find yourself in this situation, now is the time to seek more information to see if you qualify.
In a strong show of community spirit, the Biltmore Estate has stepped up to the plate, committing $2 million to local recovery efforts. This significant contribution is set to aid in cleaning up the community and restoring normalcy for many residents who have been impacted by the floodwaters. Such initiatives remind us that in times of crisis, we can count on one another.
As Asheville navigates these challenging times, the focus remains on safety, recovery, and the well-being of its community. The road to recovery may be long, but with the ongoing efforts from both authorities and residents, there is hope on the horizon. Remember to stay informed and take the necessary precautions as we move forward together.
