Sarah Cain, after 24 years of dedicated service to Asheville City Schools, has announced her retirement to start a new chapter in her life. Throughout her tenure, Ms. Cain has played a pivotal role in the Asheville City Schools family, showcasing her expertise, commitment, and devotion to the success and welfare of students and staff.

Career Highlights

Ms. Cain’s impact on Asheville City Schools has been profound, serving in various roles over the years:

  • 1999: Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher at Asheville Middle
  • 2006: Assistant Principal at Asheville Middle
  • 2009: Assistant Principal at Ira B. Jones Elementary
  • 2010: Principal at Ira B. Jones Elementary
  • 2019: Director of Elementary Education
  • 2022: Executive Director of EC and Federal Programs

Reflecting on her time at Asheville City Schools, Ms. Cain expressed her deep connection with the community and the rewarding experiences she had working with students and colleagues:

“I made a very intentional decision to work in Asheville City Schools. What struck me the most about ACS was the sense of community and the feeling of being seen and heard. I treasured the creativity and energy of that community and felt an immediate connection to the students and my colleagues.”

Ms. Cain also shared a piece of advice for new educators, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and growth in the teaching profession.

Legacy and Departure

Throughout her career, Ms. Cain received multiple accolades, including being named Principal of the Year three times (2013, 2016, and 2018). Her last day at Asheville City Schools will be Friday, June 28.
