South Paw restaurant, bar makes its South Asheville debut: On the menu

The Arrival of South Paw in South Asheville

A new dining spot has emerged in the vibrant culinary scene of South Asheville. Nestled at 1996 Hendersonville Road, South Paw is the latest addition to the array of restaurants in the area, aiming to tantalize taste buds and provide a welcoming atmosphere for patrons.

A Fresh Concept by Veteran Restaurateur

Owned by Dan Loehr, a seasoned restaurateur with a background in hotel and restaurant management, South Paw brings a unique dining experience to the neighborhood. Loehr, along with his family, decided to make Asheville their home almost four years ago, drawn to the city’s natural beauty, outdoor activities, food culture, and mild winters.

A Culinary Journey

After a hiatus from the restaurant business, Loehr saw an opportunity when Margarita’s Grill closed its doors. He seized the chance to transform the space and introduce a fresh dining concept to the community. South Paw, which opened on April 26, distinguishes itself from Loehr’s previous establishments with an elevated dining experience that caters to the region’s preferences.

An Elevated Menu

At South Paw, Chef Billy Green, formerly of Early Girl Eatery, helms the kitchen, curating a menu of New American cuisine. Dishes range from appetizers to sandwiches, featuring entrees like steak, scallops, and prime rib. Moreover, the restaurant offers a variety of signature and custom-made smash burgers that are sure to satisfy diners.

Signature Dishes to Savor

Some of the bestselling dishes at South Paw include Chef Billy’s Brussels, a delightful combination of pan-seared Brussels sprouts with honey lemon vinaigrette and a sunnyside-up egg. The menu also boasts items like smoked trout dip, Philly cheesesteak, and a vegan tempeh dish that even non-vegans find enticing.

Cocktail Creations and Beverage Selection

Bar manager David Gulino has crafted a diverse cocktail menu at South Paw, featuring classic recipes and signature concoctions like the Mad Hatter, made with Earl Grey-infused vodka. The restaurant also offers a carefully curated wine list, showcasing Loehr’s appreciation for fine wines, along with a selection of local and domestic beers, cider, and hard iced tea.

A Welcoming Atmosphere for All

With five televisions spread across the dining rooms and bar, sports enthusiasts can catch their favorite games while enjoying a meal or drinks at South Paw. The restaurant’s hours accommodate late-night diners, with a limited menu available after 10 p.m. to cater to those craving good food past traditional dining hours.

Looking to the Future

While the future of Margarita’s Grill remains uncertain, South Paw stands as a beacon of culinary delight in South Asheville. With its inviting ambiance, delectable menu offerings, and a focus on providing excellent service, the restaurant aims to become a favorite dining destination for locals and visitors alike.
