As the community grapples with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene, the city of Biltmore Forest is coming together in remarkable ways. With reports of significant flooding, power outages, and widespread debris, both residents and local organizations are stepping up to help those in need.
The storm has left its mark on the region, with 40 stormwater-related fatalities reported in Buncombe County alone. Approximately 600 individuals are currently missing, according to local officials. In addition, Forest Service recreational areas are closed due to hazardous conditions, making it unsafe for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Many roads remain impassable, particularly in lower-lying areas like Riverside Drive, where flooding has had a devastating impact.
For anyone in need of immediate assistance, the United Way of Haywood County is leading efforts to manage donations for storm recovery. Residents can help by visiting their website or mailing contributions directly to support recovery efforts. Emergency food distribution locations are also available, providing meals daily from 10 a.m. to noon, and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., while supplies last.
Here are the locations for emergency food distribution:
If you’re looking for a hot meal, Grace Community Church is providing lunch and dinner at 5182 US 70 West, Marion, NC. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., while dinner is available from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
For those in need of shelter, an emergency center has been established at 235 Armory Drive in Clyde at Haywood Community College. Residents are encouraged to bring their pets, but please ensure they are crated and come with a collar, leash, and all necessary supplies, including food and water.
If you need to pick up some basic supplies, Town Hall is distributing two bottles of water per person to residents, making sure everyone remains hydrated during this challenging time. Unfortunately, trash pickup in Biltmore Forest has been canceled for the week due to damage at the transfer station. Residents are urged to hold onto their trash if possible, as recovery efforts continue.
To help residents stay connected, T-Mobile is providing charging stations and Wi-Fi access at several locations during their open hours. Here are the available spots:
For anyone needing support or resources, the FEMA phone number is 1-800-621-3362. Use this number to ask about federally available assistance.
