Community Comes Together in Asheville to Provide Support Following Hurricane Helene

Asheville, NC- In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the Asheville community is coming together to support those in need. With many affected by the storm, various resource distribution sites have been set up across the region to offer assistance to individuals and families. It’s heartwarming to see neighbors helping neighbors during this challenging time.

Resource Distribution Locations and Assistance

This past weekend, officials released a list of locations across multiple counties where residents can receive essential supplies such as water, food, and medical assistance. The FEMA Disaster Assistance teams were on the ground, ready to register survivors and offer help. If you can’t make it to a distribution site, the FEMA app is available for download, and you can reach out by calling (800) 621-3362.

Now, if you’re in Asheville or the surrounding areas, these resource hubs have been established with open arms:

  • Emergency Water Distribution: On Tuesdays, Buncombe County will distribute water at 1 p.m. Residents are asked to bring their own containers.
  • Food Distribution: Food and water will also be provided at the Woodfin Town Hall starting from 2 p.m. on October 1.
  • Mobile Distribution Plan: Since not everyone can reach these sites, Buncombe County is working on a mobile distribution plan to ensure that those in need can still get help.

Medical Support and Well-Water Testing

If you require medical assistance, Mercy Urgent Care in East Asheville has openings available. Additionally, residents of Buncombe County who have private wells can request water testing by calling (828) 250-5016 on Monday, October 7.

Pharmacies and Medical Resources

Pharmacies are working tirelessly to ensure that medications reach those who need them, even amid power outages. Here’s a brief overview of the pharmacies currently operating:

  • Pinnacle Apothecary: Open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • PSA Pharmacy: Operating Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Nonetheless, if you’re in need of any urgent care services, you’ll find the capacity at various urgent care facilities around Asheville.

Support from Local Organizations

Community organizations are stepping up in remarkable ways. For instance, the McRig is offering free meals to those affected by the hurricane. You can swing by McDonald’s at 950 Patton Ave to grab some free grub from October 3 to October 5, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m..

Donations and Volunteer Efforts

If you have extra resources to provide, MANNA FoodBank is welcoming food, water, and supply donations. They particularly need shelf-stable foods like pop-top cans, bottled water, and baby products. It’s always admirable to see how the community comes together during such tough times.

Shelters and Assistance Hotlines

For those needing a safe place to stay, there are a few shelters available, including one at the Polk County High School. If you’re aware of someone needing assistance or just need help yourself, don’t hesitate to call the Helene Hotline at (828) 652-3241 for support.

Conclusion

As the community navigates the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, it’s essential to remember that help is available. With so many organizations and individuals stepping up to provide support, the spirit of Asheville shines bright, echoing the sentiment that we are stronger together. Stay safe, reach out for help as needed, and if you see your neighbor in need, don’t hesitate to lend a hand.
