Asheville Community Rallies to Support Food Service and Arts Workers After Hurricane Helene
Asheville, NC – The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains have faced some storms recently, but the heart of Asheville’s community is shining through the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The storm, which hit this fall, hasn’t just stirred the leaves; it has shaken up the lives of many within the arts and food service sectors in our area. As local businesses and creatives work to rebuild, a new initiative called WNC Tip It Forward is stepping in to lend a hand.
Recognizing the Impact
The effects of Helene have been particularly tough on food service workers and artists, who are already facing the challenges of uncertain income in a seasonal economy. According to local leaders, October is usually the peak month for tourism here, with bustling restaurants and vibrant events that showcase our skilled artists. However, Helene brought damaging winds and relentless rain, leading to property damage and many event cancellations that hit these communities hard.
“Artists are the heart and soul of Western North Carolina, and many are now suffering from a complete loss of income due to property damage and event cancellations,” said Katie Cornell, the Executive Director of ArtsAVL. Her concern echoes the sentiments of many who recognize that the creative spirit of this town must be nurtured and protected, especially in tough times.
What is WNC Tip It Forward?
Launched as a result of these urgent needs, WNC Tip It Forward is a collaborative effort between several local organizations including Asheville Independent Restaurants, ArtsAVL, and GBX Group. The initiative aims to gather donations that will be used to provide crucial relief grants to individuals significantly impacted by the storm. Meghan Rogers, Executive Director of AIR, emphasizes that “local restaurant workers have been hit hard by Hurricane Helene, and we need to think outside the box to help them both recover and address some of their immediate financial burdens.”
But it’s not just about raising money; it’s about raising awareness. The partners behind this initiative are working hard to inform the community about the hardships faced by many in Asheville and the surrounding areas. They believe that by coming together, we can ensure that our region emerges from this experience stronger than before.
How the Community Can Help
If you are looking for a way to lend support, WNC Tip It Forward welcomes donations of any size. The funds are being managed by ArtsAVL, which will provide receipts for charitable contributions that you can even claim on your taxes. Grant funds will be distributed based on the evolving needs of affected artists and restaurant workers, ensuring that the support goes where it is needed most.
“A portion of the funds will also support ongoing charitable work to assist WNC artists and restaurant workers,” shared Rogers, underlining a long-term commitment to lifting our community.
