This November, the vibrant city of Asheville is coming together to support local artists impacted by Hurricane Helene. Woolworth Walk, a beloved local gallery situated in the historic W. Woolworth Co. building, will dedicate its FW Gallery Featured Artist Space to showcase and sell artworks from artists who faced significant challenges due to the storm.
As the storm tore through Western North Carolina, many artists in Asheville found themselves grappling with substantial losses. “When the storm tore through Western North Carolina, many Asheville artists lost studios and with them a lot of artwork,” explains Kaela Campanella, the communications director for Woolworth Walk. The River Arts District, where a significant number of these artists had their studios, saw entire buildings submerged in floods, leaving many without a place to create.
As the holidays approach, this is particularly tough for artists, many of whom rely on this season for a significant chunk of their annual income. With the combination of losing inventory and now needing to rebuild lives and studios, the importance of community support has never been greater. “In addition to that loss of income, folks are now having to rebuild homes, studios, replace lost inventory, and still find time for their livelihood as artists,” adds Campanella. This initiative at Woolworth Walk serves not just to display art but to facilitate immediate assistance to those in need.
Woolworth Walk is always a treasure trove of creativity, and during this special month, it will be no different. The gallery represents over 170 local artists who work in a plethora of mediums including painting, photography, mixed media, woodwork, pottery, metal, and jewelry. Whether you are looking for a unique gift or a special piece to brighten your home, there’s something for everyone.
Visitors are encouraged to drop by throughout November to explore the artworks on display and consider purchasing items directly from the artists. This is an excellent opportunity to support those whose creativity enriches our community while also giving them the assistance they need during such a critical time.
If you’re keen on supporting Asheville’s talented artists, there are several ways to get involved. Visit the gallery at 25 Haywood Street in downtown Asheville during business hours to see the collection. Every piece sold helps an artist directly impacted by the hurricane.
If you’re unable to visit in person but would still like to contribute, you can reach out via phone at 828.785.2062 or send an email to info@woolworthwalk.com to inquire about purchasing artworks or getting updates about the gallery. You can also follow along on social media for the latest updates on featured artists and special events at the gallery by visiting Instagram @woolworth_walk.
Now is the time for our community to rally around our local artists and show that we care. Whether it’s through a purchase, a share on social media, or simply spreading the word, every action counts. Let’s come together in support of those who enrich our lives through art.
So mark your calendars for November and make plans to visit Woolworth Walk. Your participation could mean the world to an artist who has faced adversity and is now on the road to rebuilding. Together, let’s help restore not just studios and homes, but the vibrant creative spirit that Asheville represents.
