Asheville Community Unites for Recovery Efforts Following Tropical Storm Helene

Asheville Reacts to Tropical Storm Helene’s Impact

Asheville residents are coming together in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene, which left a significant mark on our beautiful city. The aftermath has been challenging, but the spirit of the community shines as resources and aid are being mobilized swiftly to support those in need.

Where to Go for Support and Supplies

If you or someone you know is in search of food, water, or essential supplies, there are numerous locations across Asheville and surrounding towns ready to help:

  • Asheville Middle School on 211 S. French Broad Ave is distributing MREs, food, and bottled water, available until 7 PM. Remember, it’s one case of water per family!
  • Beloved Asheville at 32 Old Charlotte Hwy accepts donations and is open from Tuesday to Saturday at 11 AM.
  • Dssolvr provides hot meals, water, and supplies daily from 9 AM at 63 N Lexington Ave.
  • Poder Emma: El Mercadito is open on Wednesday to Friday starting at 1 PM, helping provide food, diapers, and other necessities at 477 N. Louisiana Ave.
  • Shiloh Community Center at 121 Shiloh Rd is functioning as both a food and water distribution site, open until 7 PM.
  • Pack Square Park will serve as a water distribution area, allowing 2 gallons per person per day. Make sure to bring your own water container!
  • 12 Baskets Cafe, located at 610 Haywood Rd, is actively distributing food and supplies daily at 10 AM.
  • The Fresh Market at 944 Merrimon Ave is giving away free bottled water.
  • Harrah’s Cherokee Center is a donation site open from 9 AM to 5 PM located at 87 Haywood St.
  • Double Crown is a community-driven resource spot open daily from noon to 5 PM.

Food Assistance and Hot Meals

For those who could use a hot meal, several food assistance locations have stepped up. Papa John’s at 800 Fairview Rd is offering free pizzas until they run out, while Rosetta’s Kitchen is dishing out free vegetarian meals at 68 N Lexington Ave, starting at noon. Various community centers are providing meal services as well, including:

  • West Asheville Ingles offers hot meals starting at 3 PM daily.
  • Tryon Equestrian Center and the Wesley Grant Community Center are also giving out food daily at noon.

Support for Pets

Pets are also in need of care during this tough time. Asheville Veterinary Associates is distributing pet supplies at 50 New Leicester Highway. Heart of the Foothills Animal Rescue and other local animal rescue organizations are lending a paw, providing essential pet supplies from Wednesday to Saturday. Don’t forget about our furry friends!

Medical Services Available

Health services remain crucial during recovery. Various clinics and hospitals are open around the clock for any medical needs. Pardee Hospital has its emergency department available 24/7, and Fast Med clinics are nearby in multiple locations if urgent care is needed. Remember, you can receive medical help at:

  • A-B Tech for on-site medical assistance.
  • Double Crown which has a first aid medical tent open daily.

Sanitation and Hygiene Facilities

With power outages affecting many, facilities providing hot showers and clean restrooms are invaluable. Check out Walmart Supercenters in Asheville and Weaverville offering free showers and laundry services. Don’t forget to bring a towel and flip flops!

How You Can Help

Communities are stronger when we support each other! Consider donating supplies to one of the many donation centers or offering your time to distribute food or serve meals. Your help can make a big difference in someone’s life during this challenging time.

Keep an eye out for updates as the situation evolves, and don’t hesitate to reach out for support or to lend a helping hand. Together, Asheville will bounce back stronger than ever!
