Following a decision by the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners to delay the closure of the Swannanoa Library, the community is rallying to find a new home for the beloved institution. Multiple groups are working together to ensure that library services in Swannanoa can continue uninterrupted, even if it means relocating to a new site.
George Scott, chair of the Friends of the Swannanoa Library and treasurer of the Swannanoa Community Council, is leading the charge along with the Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa. Together, they are actively engaged in discussions with the county to explore options for expanded library services in Swannanoa. The goal is to maintain continuous library services until a suitable plan for relocation can be implemented.
Scott emphasized the importance of transparency and community input in the decision-making process. He expressed hope for a collaborative partnership with the county to find a solution that benefits the people of Swannanoa.
While Buncombe County is currently scouting for potential sites to house the library, specific details about these locations have not been disclosed. The Swannanoa Library will continue to operate from its current facility until a new site in the Valley area is secured.
According to county spokesperson Lillian Govus, the decision to close the Swannanoa Library was initially prompted by concerns about the building’s deteriorating condition. In a February news release, the county cited the need for extensive repairs to ensure the safety and functionality of the facility.
Upon learning of the impending closure, Scott and other community members expressed shock and disappointment. However, after the Board of Commissioners’ decision to delay the closure, there is renewed optimism among residents who value the library as a vital community resource.
Scott encouraged library patrons to continue utilizing the facility and to voice their support for preserving library services in Swannanoa. By demonstrating the library’s importance to the community, residents can help influence future decisions regarding its relocation and maintenance.
The Swannanoa community remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving access to library services. As discussions continue between community groups and county officials, there is hope for a collaborative solution that ensures the library’s continued presence in Swannanoa.
