While the storm tested our resilience, it also showcased the strength of our community and the love and support we have for one another.

This year, more than ever, I feel a profound sense of appreciation for the wonderful people in my life. November often nudges us to take stock of what matters most, and I find myself counting my blessings. I am endlessly grateful for my family, friends, and the hardworking staff who are always there to support me in my role as a representative. Together, we strive to give our beautiful mountains the recognition they deserve, especially as we work to rebuild after the devastation of the hurricane.

This year’s Hurricane Helene hit our beloved Western North Carolina hard, knocking on our doors and demanding that we find our strength. Since the storm’s impact on September 27, 2024, I have witnessed the remarkable determination of our community. From first responders to local emergency management teams, to neighbors helping neighbors, the dedication we’ve seen truly warms the heart. Though I know there’s still work ahead of us, I can’t help but celebrate how far we’ve come together. The grit shown by our community has been nothing short of inspiring.
Community Support and Resources
As we navigate the recovery process, we want everyone to be informed about the resources available to us. A few important updates include:
- Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs): There are permanent changes to the hours of operation for the Disaster Recovery Centers, with some locations such as the Jackson County DRC and A.C. Bud Hogan Community Center in McDowell County closing on November 27, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.
- Water Safety: The City of Asheville has successfully lifted the boil advisory, restoring clean water to our residents. This is a huge relief and allows us to focus on what’s truly important—spending time with loved ones this Thanksgiving.
- National Guard Standing Down: The North Carolina National Guard has completed its mission in Western NC. Their commitment has helped us enormously, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to those who served.
