Exciting Thanksgiving Turnout at the South Asheville Turkey Trot

Asheville, N.C. came alive on Thanksgiving morning as hundreds of enthusiastic runners and walkers laced up their sneakers for the sixth annual South Asheville Turkey Trot. The vibrant energy of approximately 1,400 participants filled the damp streets of Biltmore Park, turning a gray day into one filled with warmth and community spirit.

Starting With a Splash of Fun

Race organizer, Daphne Kirkwood, shared her excitement, stating, “It’s a huge crowd and we’re just so thrilled that this many people have showed up today. It’s amazing!” As the clock struck 9 a.m., the early morning showers had finally lifted, allowing the thrumming crowd to take their mark at the town square without a hitch.

Dressed to Impress

The Turkey Trot isn’t just about running; it’s also a delightful opportunity for participants to showcase their creativity in a costume contest. Many runners arrived in quirky outfits, ranging from traditional turkey costumes to festive attire that brought smiles to faces in the crowd. This added element of fun not only promoted laughter but also brought the community together in a unique way.

Building Community Spirit

Kirkwood emphasized the event’s importance, saying, “People need this so much. I mean coming out as a community together, it makes everybody stronger to be able to come and do events like this.” And it was evident from the cheering crowds and enthusiastic participants that this race meant more than just a workout before a hearty Thanksgiving feast.

Support for a Good Cause

This year, the race partnered with the Asheville Poverty Initiative’s 12 Baskets Cafe as its charity partner. Community members showed their generous side, not only participating in the trot but also offering support to a cause that helps individuals and families facing food insecurity. The collaboration between sports and philanthropy reminded everyone that while they were racing to burn calories, they were also helping to make a difference in the lives of others.

Traveling for Thanksgiving

Interestingly, as the runners took to the streets of Asheville, it was noted that over 2.2 million North Carolinians were expected to travel for Thanksgiving this year. Drivers enjoyed the benefit of lower gas prices—a comforting thought for families hitting the road for holiday gatherings. This year, with the combination of community events like the Turkey Trot and family travels, the air was filled with a sense of togetherness and gratitude.

A Memorable Start to the Day

The South Asheville Turkey Trot proved to be a heartwarming way to kick off the Thanksgiving festivities. As the race concluded, participants not only felt accomplished but also took pride in being a part of a larger movement. A day centered around health, community, and giving was just what everyone needed to embrace the spirit of the holiday.

Join the Tradition Next Year!

If you missed out this year, mark your calendars for next Thanksgiving! The South Asheville Turkey Trot is not just an event; it’s quickly becoming a beloved tradition that brings people together, encourages fitness, and fosters a strong sense of community spirit. Until next year, happy holidays!
