Asheville Comedy Festival, an annual celebration uniting stand-up comedians from across the world, is no stranger to notable headliners. This year, it continues the tradition by bringing the renowned comedian Tom Segura to the spotlight. Segura, a seasoned professional of the comedic arts, prides himself on four Netflix specials and numerous television appearances, and is ready to take Asheville’s Harrah’s Cherokee Center’s stage on his “Come Together” tour stop.
Charismatic. Likable. Known for his dark comedy. These words defining Segura speak volumes about his likely showmanship at the festival. Following his 2022 world tour that spanned 300+ cities, Segura is scaling back, delivering quality over quantity. “We’re doing really big shows,” said Segura, “but we’re doing it with enthusiastic crowds. Then my energy is way up, because I’m not burned out from touring too aggressively.”
While touring does offer limited time to explore the locations visited, this isn’t the case for Segura and Asheville. Segura attended college at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC, bringing him frequently to Asheville. In his words, “If you’re in college in Carolina, at some point you’re like, ‘We got to go to Asheville'”. He’s no stranger to the city’s own distinctive energy and is eager to return, despite the quick pace of his previous tour experiences.
Entering its 16th year, the Asheville Comedy Festival is not simply about headliners. Spanning from Wednesday, Aug. 7 to Saturday, Aug. 10, the festival plans to host dozens of comedians exhibiting their finest material at four different showcases. Each showcase includes a hilarious host and nine comedians.
Months of meticulous selection from prospective performers have resulted in a diverse line-up known as the best of the best. Some faces may be familiar to the local comedy scene, and equally, new talent will be debuted. Despite passes being sold out, individual tickets for each showcase will be available for festival enthusiasts.
Segura’s “Come Together” tour stop at the Asheville Comedy Festival isn’t just about his famous presence. It stands as a testament to his commitment to the art of comedy and the need to support and cherish its vibrancy within local scenes. As he gets ready to take the stage again, it’s a wonderful excuse for comedy lovers in Asheville to unite over laughs.
The excitement for Segura’s upcoming performance is already palpable, but the festival holds many more comedic treats in store. Get ready, Asheville, for your annual dose of hilarity, provided by some of the best in the business. And remember, if you miss out this year, keep an eye out for other events that the Asheville Comedy Festival frequently hosts throughout the year.
