The esteemed former Buncombe County Commissioner and Black Mountain Mayor Tom Sobol passed away on Sept. 4, 2024, at the age of 81. A stalwart for the people of North Carolina, Sobol’s legacy is marked by numerous leadership positions held across the state and a lifetime of selfless service.
Sobol’s political career spanned several decades, reflecting his deep commitment to public service. He served as a Buncombe County commissioner from 1984 until 2000, even undertaking the role of chairman from 1996 to 2000. During this time, he focused on numerous community development projects and played a pivotal role in shaping the policies and the future of Buncombe County.
Prior to this, in Black Mountain, Sobol took on the mantle of alderman from 1968 till 1977, before serving as mayor from 1977 to 1984. As mayor, he prioritized the improvement of public infrastructure and the overall enhancement of the quality of life in Black Mountain. His leadership style personified humility, dedication, and an undying commitment to serve his constituents.
In addition to his county leadership, Sobol also chaired several influential local boards. These included the North Carolina State Personnel Commission, the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County Board, and Asheville-Buncombe Crime Stoppers. His contribution to these organizations was instrumental in furthering their community reach and impact.
Known for his tireless efforts to serve his community and the county, Sobol’s loss is deeply mourned. His presence will be missed by all those who had the privilege of working with him and the countless lives he touched.
A service to celebrate Sobol’s life will be held at the Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Swannanoa on Friday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. This will be a gathering to honor his public life and personal integrity. Residents of Buncombe County and beyond are expected to attend to pay their respects to this pillar of local leadership and service.

As a guiding light in public service, his contributions have had a lasting impact on Buncombe County and his memory will remain etched in the hearts of his constituents. This revered figure, hailed for his genuine dedication and tireless efforts to uplift North Carolina, will leave an enduring legacy.
Despite his departure, his extensive work and path-breaking contributions will ensure that Tom Sobol continues to inspire all those who choose to follow in his successful and purposeful footsteps. Sobol’s life is a testament to a career in service dedicated to his community and state, and his legacy will indubitably continue to thrive.
