North Carolina Trusted Elections Tour Comes to Weaverville

The North Carolina Trusted Elections Tour will be arriving in Weaverville on Friday, August 20, aiming to ramp up public consciousness about the fairness and security of elections in the region. The event, which is part of a series of Town Halls, will be held at the First Baptist Church from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

A Got-It-Together Non-partition Effort

The tour’s success is anchored by various non-partisan election experts that offer a thorough explanation on why votes are secure. It’s a joint venture led surprisingly by leaders from diametrically opposite sides of the political spectrum: Robert Orr, a former Republican justice of the state Supreme Court, along with Jennifer Roberts, former mayor of Charlotte and a Democrat. This demonstrates unanimity in the desire to restore public faith in our electoral process, ensuring it remains serene and devoid of intimidations and harassment to election workers.

Aiming to Clear the Air

The initiative is prompted by the prevailing atmosphere of confusion gripping voters due to the recent changes in voting laws and the general rules of engagement. There’s also the increased media attention given to election skeptics and deniers. The tour targets to demystify these issues and give the common North Carolinian voter clarity on how to vote and the assurance that their ballot will be counted.

A Worthy Cause

The Carter Center, an organization founded four decades ago by President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, champions democratic principles and sound voting practices worldwide. They are a co-sponsor of the Trusted Elections tour. While they initially focused more on international threats to democracy, they have presently shifted their attention to confront the growing epidemic of partisanship and misinformation in the homeland.

The Scope of the Tour

Amid increasing reports of a looming risk for election-related violence in North Carolina and other battleground states, the Tour will be held across 28 of North Carolina’s cities with an additional statewide online event. The League of Women Voters Asheville-Buncombe County will be present in Weaverville with comprehensive information about voter registration, the voting process, voter ID requirements, and our VOTE 411 site with all the information needed to be an informed voter.
