UNC Asheville Police Expand Jurisdiction Beyond Campus After City Council Vote

Police officers at UNC Asheville are now allowed to patrol beyond the borders of campus. In a 5-1 vote on May 14, 2024, Asheville City Council approved the jurisdiction expansion to include nearby properties that serve as student housing. Council Member Kim Roney voted against the measure.

UNC Asheville Police Suggest Joint Jurisdiction with Asheville Police for Specific Area

The agreement with the Asheville Police Department will allow UNCA police to patrol and make arrests.

Repeat Offender Charged with Burglary, Trespass at Asheville Student Housing Complex

News 13 reported in April 2024 that UNCA’s police chief was pushing to share jurisdiction of the Verge Apartments, an area occupied mainly by students beyond the campus borders, after a man who had been banned from the property was charged with breaking into two apartments. Asheville Police officers would still have primary jurisdiction over higher-level crime cases and investigations, as reported previously.
