Asheville, N.C. is currently facing some extreme weather as Hurricane Helene makes its presence felt across the region. With the forecast predicting a high of 75 degrees on Saturday and the potential for isolated tornadoes, local animal rescue teams are bracing for impact. First on the list, Brother Wolf Animal Rescue (BWAR) has made an urgent plea to the community for help.
On Thursday, BWAR was forced to evacuate its Glendale Avenue facility due to severe flooding. The organization now finds itself in a challenging situation, needing to find safe spaces for around 75 cats that are currently in their care. Executive Director Leah Craig Chumbley has expressed the organization’s deep concern for the animals and the community at large. “Our hearts are heavy for everyone affected by Hurricane Helene. We know that with the help of our community, we can keep our animals safe through this disaster,” Chumbley stated.
BWAR is looking for individuals and families willing to step up and foster these displaced animals on an emergency basis. Chumbley mentioned that foster families should be prepared to care for the cats until possibly next Tuesday. This is a tremendous opportunity for animal lovers to lend a helping hand during this critical time.
If you’re interested in fostering, you can reach out to BWAR by emailing friends@bwar.org. They will provide all necessary supplies, including food, bedding, and medical support. “We are deeply grateful for any support during this difficult time,” Chumbley added.
While fostering is a great way to get involved, there are several other ways community members can help animal rescue efforts. Financial contributions can be made directly on their website, which is a great option for those who may not be able to foster an animal but still want to make a difference. Furthermore, supply donations of essential items are also highly appreciated. Things like towels, travel crates, leashes, harnesses, and blankets will go a long way in helping these animals during a tough time.
Weather conditions are expected to continue changing, with sustained winds likely causing more flooding and power outages in parts of the mountains as the storm approaches. Residents are advised to take precautions and seek higher ground as needed, especially in counties like McDowell, Mitchell, and Yancey. The safety and well-being of both people and animals are paramount as we navigate through the storm.
As we face these challenges together, the kindness and compassion of the Asheville community will undoubtedly shine through. Whether that means opening your home to a cat in need, contributing supplies, or simply spreading the word, every little bit helps. Together, we can ensure that our furry friends remain safe and cared for during this tumultuous time.
Make sure to stay updated on the weather and take the necessary precautions to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. While it’s a tough time for many, we encourage everyone to reach out and help where you can. The spirit of Asheville is one of support and community, and we all have a role to play in looking after each other—and our beloved animals.
