Asheville, North Carolina – We’re all still feeling the effects of Hurricane Helene, but we’ve got some good news for our community! The United States Postal Service (USPS) has officially resumed operations throughout North Carolina after the storm wreaked havoc in several areas. While the service is back up and running, there’s still quite a bit of work to do to manage the backlog of mail and packages in the wake of the hurricane.
According to a recent statement by USPS, as of October 30, all USPS processing facilities across North Carolina and the majority of retail and delivery units have reopened their doors. They mentioned, “Where retail and delivery units remain inaccessible, we have relocated operations to nearby units and are further deploying mobile retail units to make sure we can provide retail and delivery services to impacted communities as quickly as possible.” Isn’t that great to hear?
There have been several inquiries regarding postal operations in Barnardsville following Helene’s aftermath. Philip Bogenberger, a USPS spokesman, shared that the Postal Service has temporarily moved retail and delivery services from the impacted Post Offices in the area to nearby locations. This initiative is to ensure that the wonderful residents of Barnardsville can still receive their mail and packages in a timely manner. However, the full recovery is dependent on ongoing repairs and cleanup efforts by the landlord of the Barnardsville facility.
While things are moving forward, it’s important to note that there are still challenges ahead. A total of 21 locations in western North Carolina remain closed, including the Micaville post office, which unfortunately was destroyed during the hurricane. At least 20 locations were reported to have flooded, and 16 facilities were without power as of the latest update.
In Barnardsville, residents can still access retail services from a mobile unit at the Post Office. Additionally, delivery services are currently being managed from the Weaverville Post Office. As the USPS works tirelessly to restore traditional services, they will keep customers informed with any key updates regarding the reopening of Barnardsville and other locations.
If you or someone you know has relocated due to the storm, submitting a change of address request is quite simple. Customers can do this at any Post Office or easily online at the USPS website. The Postal Service has 838 facilities scattered across North Carolina, but communities that use ZIP Codes starting with 286, 287, and 288 faced the most severe impacts from Hurricane Helene.
As we begin to rebuild from Hurricane Helene, we also see our community coming together in amazing ways. Numerous local businesses are being proactive, asking for regional support to tackle the recovery. Many are hosting events and gatherings to help raise awareness and funds to support each other.
For example, Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard recently reopened and is inviting the public to join a recovery event aimed at bringing people together and promoting local support. It’s uplifting to see everyone pitching in as we work towards recovery.
The USPS has dispatched teams to affected areas when possible and is currently working on accessing regions that remain difficult to reach. They assure the community that further resources will be made available for residents in need.
