Rebuilding Hope in Asheville: Community Unites to Support Veterans After Storm Damage

Rebuilding Hope in Asheville: A Community Rallies for Veterans

Asheville, N.C. – It’s a tough time for many in our community, especially the brave veterans who called the Veterans Restoration Quarters their home. Just recently, the Swannanoa River turned into a raging beast as storm Helene swept through, causing extensive damage to the quarters, which serves as a vital sanctuary for our heroes adjusting to life after military service.

A Quick Response

Thanks to the swift action of the National Guard, the 167 veterans residing there were evacuated safely. The storm left its mark, but in the face of adversity, a wave of support came pouring in. The veteran-led nonprofit Team Rubicon wasted no time and jumped right in to help with recovery efforts, showing just how much our community values those who have served. They have been working hard ever since, and just recently, they received a boost from none other than the 101st Airborne Division, who joined hands to help rebuild the damaged facility.

A Home for Heroes

Brandon Wilson, the chief operating officer of the Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM), shared the emotional impact of the disaster: “This place here was the home of so many veterans as they work their way through homelessness and transition from the military. So, all these veterans lost their homes, and so we are working to restore and rebuild that home as quickly as possible.” It’s incredible to see how everyone is coming together, fueled by a shared mission of ensuring that our local heroes have a place to call home.

The Road Ahead

The ambitious goal is to have the Veterans Restoration Quarters back up and running by Veterans Day next year. A formidable timeline, no doubt, but with the spirit of teamwork and community support at play, it feels like a challenge we can all tackle together.

Calling for Volunteers

As the efforts continue to rebuild, there is a call to action for volunteers. The organization is actively seeking individuals who want to roll up their sleeves and make a difference. Whether you have skills in construction or simply want to lend a helping hand, everyone has something valuable to offer in this time of need.

How to Get Involved

If you are ready to dive into this noble endeavor and support our veterans—who have selflessly dedicated their lives for our freedom—there are avenues for you to help. You can find more information about how to volunteer and lend your support to ABCCM through their official channels. They would be thrilled to have you join the rebuilding effort!

Conclusion: A Community United

In times of crisis, it’s heartwarming to witness how quickly a community can come together to support one another. As work continues at the Veterans Restoration Quarters, it’s a reminder of what can happen when we all unite toward a common goal. The journey to recovery may be long, but with a supportive community, every step forward is a step toward healing. Remember, we’re not just rebuilding a structure; we are restoring hope and a sense of home for those who have sacrificed so much.

So let’s rally together, Asheville! Our veterans deserve our support, and together we can help them rise again.
