Veterans Stand Down Event Provides Essential Support in Asheville
Asheville, N.C. – In a heartfelt effort to support those who have served in the military, a “Stand Down” event took place today at the Quality Inn on Tunnel Road. This gathering was especially timely, given the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Helene that has left many veterans in tough situations.
Community Coming Together
The event was organized to offer vital resources for veterans who have been impacted by the aftermath of the storm. Attendees were able to access a range of services including employment assistance, housing support, and peer mentoring. There was also crucial help available for those facing crises and looking for recovery options. While all of this valuable assistance was on offer, event organizers also did not forget to serve lunch, making the event feel warm and welcoming. Therapy dogs were present too, bringing smiles and comfort to veterans who often deal with the challenges of reintegration and recovery.
Urgency of the Situation
Jessica Rice from the ABCCM (which stands for Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry) highlighted the pressing needs of local veterans, saying, “This community definitely did see some devastation. We’ve been closely involved with the Veterans Restoration Quarters, which unfortunately have been heavily impacted.”
Rice explained that the men’s facility has suffered extensive damage and is currently undergoing gutting and restoration. “A lot of our guys have been displaced,” she added. Thankfully, the organization has been able to reach out to these displaced veterans to ensure they are safe and warm, offering on-site services that help meet their immediate needs during this difficult time.
Upcoming Stand Down Events
For those who were unable to attend today, there’s good news! Two more “Stand Down” events are scheduled for the coming weeks. Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 24, and Thursday, October 31. Both of these events will again be held at the Quality Inn on Tunnel Road from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This provides another opportunity for veterans to receive essential resources and community support.
Finding Shelter
In light of the recent flooding, the Veterans Restoration Quarters have relocated to the hotel to accommodate those in need. The ongoing efforts to ensure that veterans have access to shelter, food, and critical services are being supported through a grant from the Department of Labor, which underscores the commitment to helping veterans in our community.
Volunteers Making a Difference
In addition to organized events, a local volunteer group known as the “Redneck Air Force” has been actively aiding victims of Hurricane Helene in Buncombe County and surrounding areas.
