Water Update for Asheville: What You Need to Know
Greetings, Asheville! We have an important update regarding our water situation that everyone needs to pay attention to. As of October 14, the North Fork water treatment plant in Black Mountain is still supplying highly chlorinated water to our beloved city’s distribution system. While many areas are beginning to see water service restored, there are some crucial guidelines we must all follow.
Water Restoration Progress
It’s great news to hear that water service is gradually returning to areas west of Swannanoa, specifically in Haw Creek and parts of Fairview. Preparations are also wrapped up and ready for water to reach the Fairview area along with higher elevations in South Asheville, which had been without service. Our Water Resources team is actively working to pump water into these areas. Downtown Asheville and north Asheville can also look forward to seeing their water services restored as well.
Safety First: Boil Water Notices
Before you start celebrating, it’s crucial to understand that the water is currently NOT SAFE to drink straight from the tap. If you rely on water from Mills River, be aware that you’re under a Boil Water Advisory. Similarly, for those using North Fork water, a Boil Water Notice is in effect. This means that any water intended for drinking, cooking, or even brushing your teeth should be boiled vigorously for at least one minute before using it.
What to Do Before Water Returns
As water services come back, here are some essential steps to take before you get your water back:
- Flip off the breaker to your water heater.
- Turn off the water to your water heater.
- Shut off hot water under all your sinks.
- Remove the aerator from your faucets; these typically unscrew easily.
- Turn off your ice maker.
- If you have a whole house filter, ensure you turn off water to that as well.
When Water Service Returns
Once your water service is back on, it’s important to properly flush your plumbing to ensure all systems are good to go. Here’s what you should do:
- Start by running the bathtub’s cold water faucet for a few minutes to flush out the lines.
- Once your home plumbing has been flushed, it’s safe to turn your water heater back on.
- Your toilet can be flushed after completing the first two steps.
Report Water Line Breaks
As restoration continues, our dedicated Water Resources staff will be on standby to address any new water line breaks that may crop up as pressure returns to the system. If you spot a water line break, don’t hesitate to report it! Just call Water Resources Customer Service at 828-251-1122 to get them on the case quickly.
