ASHEVILLE – A West Asheville church will provide temporary housing for a 20-bed homeless shelter starting June 1. The initiative, known as Safe Shelter, is a collaborative effort between three local churches and Counterflow LLC. This shelter aims to cater to underserved communities, including families with children, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
The Safe Shelter program began its journey in November at AHOPE Day Center and then relocated to Grace Episcopal Church on Merrimon Avenue for the month of May. Now, it is set to move to Trinity United Methodist Church on Haywood Road for the month of June, under the direction of Christian Chambers.
The model of Safe Shelter draws inspiration from Homeward Bound’s Room in the Inn program, which previously operated for over a decade. Trinity United Methodist Church, led by Pastor Nancy Dixon Walton, has previously served as an emergency winter shelter in November 2021.
Safe Shelter secured 12 months of funding from Buncombe County and the city of Asheville in September, totaling $485,500. These funds were part of the COVID relief directed at securing immediate shelter beds. The program has enough funding to continue its operations into 2025 and is actively seeking additional grant funding and partnerships with the city to ensure sustainability.
Despite initial concerns from some residents, Safe Shelter aims to foster positive relationships with the community by providing a safe and supportive environment for those in need. The shelter operates referral-only and is staffed by a trained team during its hours of operation from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Community health workers at the shelter assist guests in securing permanent housing and addressing their various needs. The program prioritizes a trauma-informed approach to ensure the well-being of all guests.
