Asheville is buzzing with excitement as the countdown to Winter Lights 2023 begins! This enchanting event at the North Carolina Arboretum promises to transform the gardens into a magical wonderland, captivating visitors of all ages. With stunning illuminated displays and thoughtful artistry, Winter Lights draws crowds every year, and this season is expected to be as breathtaking as ever.
Ever wonder how such a dazzling show comes to life? The real magic happens behind the scenes, thanks to a dedicated team of light designers led by Ben Asbury, the exhibits curator for special events at the Arboretum. Asbury, who is also a musician and artist, started his journey with Winter Lights in 2020, initially working on the installation crew. Little did he know, his work would soon lead him to take the reins of this spectacular display.
“I had no idea how extensive and detailed the show was,” Asbury recalls. “But my creative and aesthetic sensibilities quickly set in.” His passion for the project shines through, revealing his desire to create an immersive experience that resonates with visitors, many of whom may be visiting the Arboretum for the very first time.
One of the most incredible aspects of Winter Lights is its emphasis on the natural landscape. Asbury explains, “There are many folks that attend Winter Lights who have never visited our property, so it motivates and inspires me to shine a light on our natural landscapes.” The aim is to encourage guests to return throughout the year, experiencing the Arboretum in its various seasonal splendor.
Work on the exhibit kicks off as early as August, and a dedicated team of 5-6 individuals works tirelessly, bringing ideas to life right up until the event opens. “The last two or three weeks before opening day can be a little crazy,” Asbury shares. With many hands on deck, including team members and community partners, they ensure everything comes together seamlessly.
This year, the exhibit features a delightful mix of in-house designs and stunning large-scale commercial displays. Asbury emphasizes that a lot of preparation goes into making the event special. “What they don’t know is that there is an enormous amount of preparation over the spring and summer,” he points out. From building signature displays like the beloved Quilt Garden to meticulously designing the light arrangements, every detail is considered.
While the light displays are undeniably beautiful, Asbury hopes that Winter Lights serves as more than just a festive experience. “Art for the sake of art is an ideal that I hold very dear,” he notes. The event not only brings families and friends together but also functions as a fundraiser and outreach opportunity for the Arboretum. The impact of gathering the community to enjoy an artistic spectacle helps promote the significance of the Arboretum’s offerings.
With the anticipation building, the official opening of Winter Lights is scheduled for November 15. Tickets are already on sale for those eager to immerse themselves in this delightful experience. As the colorful lights twinkle and illuminate the cold winter nights, it’s sure to create lasting memories for everyone who attends!
So, gather your loved ones, and prepare for a night filled with wonder and awe at the North Carolina Arboretum. This holiday season, don’t miss out on the chance to witness the enchanting beauty of Winter Lights.
