As the holiday season approaches, Asheville is once again transformed into a breathtaking wonderland, thanks to the 11th annual Winter Lights at The North Carolina Arboretum. Kicking off on November 15 and running every night through December 31, this dazzling display features more than one million lights that celebrate the beauty of the four seasons.
This year’s theme, “Seasons of Light,” offers visitors a unique experience as they stroll through enchanting displays representing spring, summer, fall, and winter. Imagine towering flowers of “Spring Sprouts” blooming in hues of pink, green, and yellow, or finding yourself in a magical world filled with whimsical mushrooms in “Fall Fungi.” The captivating exhibits also feature giant butterflies and a beloved giant caterpillar, making it a truly immersive experience.
The team at The North Carolina Arboretum has been hard at work since October, ensuring that this year’s Winter Lights is just as magical as previous years. Not only is it a visual feast, but this event also plays a vital role in supporting the Arboretum’s employees and programs.
Winter Lights serves as the largest fundraiser of the year for The North Carolina Arboretum Society, directly benefitting the grounds and local economy. The event creates jobs for local vendors and musicians and supports seasonal staff who help bring this spectacular show to life.
New additions in 2024 include the Enchanted Oasis, an interactive light installation that transforms in response to touch and movement, adding a personal connection to the display. Guests can also marvel at the Ice Castle, with its shimmering winter spires reaching toward the sky. And, of course, returning favorites like the 50-foot animated Tree of Light, the illuminated musical quilt garden, and the Polar Express railroad promise to delight visitors once again.
After a long evening of exploration, relax with some delicious hot cocoa or other treats from the Bent Creek Bistro, and enjoy live music to round out your night.
Tickets are available now at ncwinterlights.com. They’re sold on a per-vehicle basis with a three-tiered pricing system reflecting demand. Those visiting on off-peak dates can enjoy lower prices, making it accessible for everyone. The Arboretum highly recommends purchasing tickets in advance and online for a hassle-free experience. Don’t forget, members of The North Carolina Arboretum Society get a $5 discount on tickets purchased in advance!
This year, the Arboretum has launched the “Share the Wonder” campaign, allowing ticketholders to donate tickets to individuals and families in need. These donations will be distributed through local nonprofits, ensuring that everyone can experience the magic of Winter Lights.
Whether you’re reconnecting with loved ones or creating new memories, Winter Lights at The North Carolina Arboretum promises a lovely evening filled with wonder and joy. So, grab your family and friends, bundle up, and prepare to embrace the spirit of the season in this enchanting light display. Happy holidays!
