Western North Carolina High School Girls Soccer Power Rankings: Asheville High Finishes 2024 on Top
The Western North Carolina girls soccer season has wrapped up, with Asheville High claiming the top spot in the final power rankings. The competition was fierce, with four different teams reaching the fourth round of the playoffs and Polk County making a strong run to the West Regional final.
1. Asheville High (18-4-2)
The Cougars had a standout season, making a commanding run to the fourth round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs. Led by senior Lily Foo’s 22 goals and sophomore Peyton Case’s 20 goals, Asheville earned its third conference title in four years. Despite a heartbreaking defeat to No. 8 Mooresville in double overtime, Asheville High maintained its top ranking.
2. Polk County (15-5-3)
Polk County impressed with their performance in a competitive Mountain Foothills 7 Conference, securing a second-place finish. The Wolverines went on to make a remarkable playoff run, claiming the No. 2 seed in 1A and reaching the West Regional finals, falling just short of the state championship game.
3. West Henderson (21-2)
Senior Marianne Maxon led West Henderson with a remarkable career that included becoming WNC’s all-time leading goal scorer. With 186 goals and 86 assists to her name, Maxon’s contributions were instrumental in the Falcons’ success this season, despite falling in the third round of the playoffs.
4. Hendersonville (16-3-1)
The Bearcats dominated their way to a conference title, going undefeated with a single tie against Brevard. Their strong performance carried them into the fourth round of the playoffs before a tough loss to Wheatmore ended their season.
5. Brevard (20-3-2)
Despite entering the playoffs as the No. 12 seed, Brevard made a statement with an impressive playoff run that included victories over higher-seeded teams. Freshman Charley Goodwin stood out with 34 goals, leading the team alongside sophomore Nora Felty’s 28 goals.
6. Roberson (14-6)
Roberson faced an early playoff exit but found consolation in the fact that the team that eliminated them, Marvin Ridge, went on to win the 4A state title. Junior Kate Pratt’s 24 goals and 16 assists were key in Roberson’s success this season.
7. Reynolds (18-7)
Reynolds put up a strong performance, reaching the third round of the 3A playoffs before bowing out to No. 2 North Davidson on the road. Despite facing challenges, Reynolds’ defense held up well, recording 14 shutouts throughout the season.
8. Madison (16-2-2)
Madison’s season came to an end in the second round of the 2A playoffs, but the team maintained an impressive streak without a loss in the Western Highlands Conference, extending it to 30 games.
9. Swain County (14-5-1)
Swain County’s season concluded in the second round against eventual state champions Christ the King. Junior Mya Burrows-Kurr showcased her skills with 36 goals and 25 assists throughout the season.
10. Owen (8-7-3)
Owen exceeded expectations with a surprising playoff run as the No. 23 seed, knocking off higher-seeded teams before falling to Hendersonville. Their resilience and determination were on full display during the postseason.
