Asheville, N.C. is buzzing with excitement as the WNC Nature Center continues its journey to unveil the Gateway to the Southern Appalachians. One of the most thrilling parts of this project is the introduction of a brand-new pollinator garden. However, the team is reaching out to the community, sharing that more funds are needed to ensure its successful completion.
According to a recent release, the Nature Center has already managed to raise over $250,000 for this fantastic initiative. Yet, there’s more work to be done—an additional $150,000 is still required to finish this exciting project. The details can be explored on the center’s website, where you can learn about the various components and plans for the garden.
The new pollinator garden isn’t just a pretty patch of flowers; it’s designed to be an interactive experience for visitors of all ages. The garden will feature natural play areas, a magical planted meadow, shaded coverings for those hot summer days, an education kiosk, and of course, vibrant butterflies fluttering about. The idea is to draw people into the stunning world of Western North Carolina, showcasing its beauty and diversity.
Butterflies are not only beautiful to watch but play a vital role in our ecosystem. Unfortunately, their numbers have taken a hit in recent years due to factors like habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change. Butterflies are natural pollinators, helping our gardens thrive, and serve as a crucial indicator of a healthy environment. The release emphasizes that butterflies are more than just lovely creatures; they’re essential for a thriving ecosystem.
As Eli Strull, the Nature Center’s curator of education and guest experience, mentioned, this project will enhance guest engagement with the natural world. The initiative focuses on creating nature play opportunities, which come with numerous research-backed benefits, particularly for children and families.
The WNC Nature Center has been a beloved destination for families and nature lovers alike. Back in July 2004, they launched a seasonal exhibit titled “The Beauty of Butterflies.” This delightful showcase allowed visitors to meander through a mesh hoop house, experiencing flourishing plants and about 20 different butterfly species. For seven consecutive years, this exhibit provided invaluable education on the butterfly life cycle and how to foster habitats for pollinators.
Given the overwhelming success and popularity of the butterfly exhibit, the Nature Center has woven permanent butterfly gardens into its strategic development plans. Strull stated, “The addition of fun and creative ways to explore the Nature Center creates more opportunities for guests to connect with the incredible diversity of life in our mountains.” The hope is that this connection will inspire visitors to carry their love for nature beyond the center’s boundaries, creating a beautiful ripple effect.
The community can contribute to this wonderful initiative by donating online through the WNC Nature Center’s website. If you prefer a more personal touch, you can call them at 828-259-8092 or mail your donations directly to Friends of the WNC Nature Center, PO Box 19151, Asheville, NC 28815. For any questions, feel free to shoot an email to development@wildwnc.org. Every bit helps and goes a long way in making this ambitious project a reality!
As Asheville embraces this exciting chapter in its commitment to conservation and education, it stands as a reminder for all of us to cherish and protect the vibrant ecosystems surrounding us. Let’s support the WNC Nature Center in its admirable mission to create a thriving butterfly garden and inspire future generations to value our natural world.
